How To Do  Everything!

Living at a distance from towns and services goes a lot smoother if you know how to do everything!

New plans and jobs will come up. Things wear out and break. You'll want to be as self reliant and prepared as possible. You will need and want to do it yourself.

Our first mission, the spark that created this site, is to help people realize they can do what needs to be done. And to create or gather, to provide helpful 'how to' information.

Example 1.  If you are new to solar power and want to get a handle on what that's about, we have a brief starter page for that right here.

Example 2.  Maybe it's time to clean your wood stove chimney pipe. If you don't already have that job down pat, you will find a well done video here

The Four Things:

We want to stress this: If you are new to a  homesteading, off grid living, self reliant lifestyle out in the country - no matter how you label it - there are four things you must know from the beginning.

Make a detailed plan for these and write it down.  Know precisely how you will be supplied and secure in these areas;

  • Shelter
  • Food
  • Water
  • Heat for winter

Those are crucial and foundational. Those are musts for survival.

Do you see what we are getting at?  With just that - you have your little house on the prairie. Or your yurt in the desert. Your cabin in the mountains. The life you chose.

With those secure, you're ok.  People have successfully and happily lived that way since long before there was a grid.

Now always, you want more than that, but how do you do everything? You build from there. You learn basic solar power,  stove pipe cleaning, and how to deal with pests and design and build your chicken coop - all those jobs to come - as you go along.

Some projects will be daunting and difficult, or very unpleasant.  But, if your heart belongs out there, you will enjoy doing most of them.

Again for emphasis, we are not saying there won't be hard days. There will be hard days.

We are saying believe in yourself.

Maintain security in those four fundamental areas.

By doing that, and keeping that certainty in mind through the ups and downs of other things, you really can keep calm and carry on.

In everything else, you will learn and find your way.

 That's how we do everything.
